Choosing occupational health and safety representative

The occupational health and safety representative must be elected at workplaces with at least 10 employees.

The occupational health and safety representative is elected

The occupational health and safety representative must be elected at workplaces with at least 10 employees. Deputy representatives must also be elected. It is also recommended that an occupational health and safety representative be elected for smaller workplaces. When the workplace has at least 20 employees, an occupational health and safety committee must be established. Elections are generally held every two years.

The employer must ensure that the occupational health and safety representative and deputy representatives receive appropriate training in the regulations and instructions concerning occupational safety and other matters related to the performance of their duties. The need for training must be agreed upon with the employer and the occupational safety representative and deputy representatives within two months of the election.

The training must not entail any costs or loss of earnings for the occupational health and safety representative or deputy representatives. The right to training is based on the Act on Occupational Safety and Health Supervision.

Occupational Health and Safety Ombudsmen

Some of the collective agreements concluded by AKT include the possibility of electing Occupational Health and Safety Ombudsmen in addition to Occupational Health and Safety Representatives. They represent a specific personnel group, such as a location, union branch or profession.

Occupational Health and Safety Ombudsmen are not to replace the Occupational Health and Safety Representatives, but to strengthen the occupational health and safety cooperation network at the workplace. Ombudsmen also have the right to occupational safety training.
