Occupational accidents are prevented through proactive measures

Many accidents could be avoided with a proactive and comprehensive risk assessment in advance. With this list of ten tips, you can get a good start in preventing work accidents.

1. Pay attention to trips to and from work

A significant proportion of work-related accidents occur when travelling to and from work. Allow plenty of time for your trips and wear good footwear.

2. Proper lighting

Lighting at workstations, walkways and roads affects occupational safety in many ways. The employer must have lighting that contributes to occupational safety, for example in parking areas.

3. Safety with reflectors

Good reflectors or work clothes equipped with LED lights provide additional safety.

4. Identify slippery and sloping danger areas

People who do transport work are usually familiar with driving and working on slippery and sloping surfaces. The employer must ensure that the workplace and common workplaces have operating instructions for preventing slipperiness.

5. Disorganization creates risks

Many work-related accidents have started because something was left in the wrong place. Spilled liquids also pose a risk.

6. Cold and heat impair thinking and alertness

In addition to heat, cold also strains the body and weakens physical performance. Remember to dress in layers, and if necessary, put wool underneath.

7. Rest and breaks restore

When conditions are stressful, the importance of enough rest and breaks is emphasized when working in cold and hot weather.

8. Eat and drink sensibly

Eat regularly and healthily so that food gives you strength. Sufficient hydration is also important.

9. Efficiency is not about rushing

A large proportion of work accidents could be avoided with better planning and anticipation. A small stop during work often leads to a better outcome.

10. Observe and report

To ensure a safe workplace, the contribution of employees, occupational safety representatives, union representatives and supervisors is needed in observing risks and reporting them.
